TRAVEL GRANTS AND AWARDS
Dear Member
The following Travel Grants and Awards are available for the year 2008:
SMITH & NEPHEW
Applications are invited from Orthopaedic Surgeons wishing to visit North America to further their interest in Orthopaedics.
Applications will be considered as follows:-
-
To attend a specific Orthopaedic training course in any of the sub-specialties including Trauma, Arthroscopy,
Pediatrics and Arthroplasty, or
- Attendance at a Congress endorsed by the American Academy or North American Orthopaedic Association, or
A visit to a number of academic centers or specialist practices to further knowledge of Orthopaedic
techniques or procedures.
The bursary is for R15 000 and is sponsored by Smith & Nephew.
The Company requests that any programme should include a visit to Smith & Nephew’s Orthopaedic Head Office in
Memphis, Tennessee. Accommodation costs for this visit will be borne by the Company separately.
Applicants to ensure their trip are completed before the meeting of the 2008 54rd Annual SAOA Congress.
Both registered Orthopaedic Surgeons, or Orthopaedic Surgeons in training are eligible. The Grant must be
taken up before the end of the calendar year following that in which it is awarded, or else it will be forfeited.

SMITH & NEPHEW LITERARY AWARD:
A sum of R2 500 will be awarded by Smith & Nephew to the best publication in an approved local or international
journal of the preceding year. The main author of the publication must be a member of the SAOA.
Applicants must submit a reprint or a photocopy of the publication. An applicant may submit more than one publication.
